Sony WH-1000XM5 first look: Pre-orders in Australia are now open

Sony’s new WH-1000XM5 headphones, as Phil recently mentioned, are a significant upgrade over previous generations, with a plethora of externally visible, hardware and software customisation courtesy of the Sony Headphones app.

After attending the launch event, I’ve gathered some firsthand information to help you decide whether to purchase the XM5 or the previous generation XM4s.

Sony WH-1000XM5 noise-cancelling headphones rumours have finally been put to rest. Sony has revealed the availability and price of its 2022 flagship wireless phones.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is now available for pre-order for $399 from Amazon (opens in new tab), Best Buy (opens in new tab), and Adorama (opens in new tab). Black and silver are the available colours. Pre-orders for the Sony WH-100XM5 are expected to arrive by the end of May.

Pre-order Sony WH-1000XM5 at Amazon for $399.

Amazon is now accepting pre-orders for the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphones. They have the industry’s best noise cancellation, thanks to Sony’s own integrated processor V1 and HD noise-cancelling processor QN1. Hands-free calls are crystal clear thanks to precise voice pickup technology and advanced audio signal processing. Sony WH-1000XM5 promises up to 30 hours of comfortable listening thanks to its lightweight design, soft fit leather headband, and on-ear cushions.

Sony’s WH-1000XM5 replaces the WH-100XM4 and aims to raise the bar in the audio wearables category. Sony’s V1 integrated processor and QN1 HD noise-cancelling processor control 8 microphones for incredibly effective noise cancellation.

Meanwhile, advanced audio signal processing and precise voice pickup technology ensure crystal clear calls. The Sony WH-1000XM5 is compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa, allowing you to listen to music, talk on the phone, set reminders, and do other things with your voice.

We haven’t had a chance to test these yet, but our sister site Tom’s Guide’s Sony WH-1000XM5 review tells us everything we need to know. The headphones received a 4.5 out of 5-star rating and an Editor’s Choice award for their sound, control options, and noise cancellation.

The sound reproduction of the Sony WH-1000XM5 was natural and detailed during real-world audio testing. Active noise-cancellation was equally impressive, as it nearly eliminated all background noise.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 weighs 8.8 ounces less than the 8.9 ounce WH-1000XM4. The Sony WH-1000XM5 retains the same lightweight low-profile aesthetic as the Sony WH-1000XM4. The soft-fit leather headband and on-ear cushions on the XM5 provide luxurious, long-lasting comfort.

With ANC on, you’ll get up to 30 hours of power per charge, just like the XM4 model. By turning off ANC, you can get up to 40 hours of battery life, which is two hours longer than the XM4 model. In a pinch, a 3-minute charge via USB-C PD provides 3 hours of battery life.

If you’re looking for a new pair of earphones, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 are a good option.

Pre-order Sony WH-1000XM5 at Best Buy for $399.

Best Buy is now accepting pre-orders for the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphones. They have industry-leading noise cancellation, thanks to Sony’s own integrated processor V1 and HD noise-cancelling processor QN1. Hands-free conversations are crystal clear thanks to precise voice pickup technology and advanced audio signal processing. Sony WH-1000XM5 is a lightweight headphone with a soft fit leather headband and on-ear cushions that promises up to 30 hours of comfortable listening.

The following are some of the noteworthy features of the new XM5 model:

  1. Wearing sensor – Now smarter and capacitive, the headphones should stop/start perfectly when you take them off/put them on.
  2. The pressure sensor and other clever AI kick in automatically, for example, they can tell when you’re in an aeroplane without requiring manual action.
  3. Sliders, hinges, and joints now move smoothly, so the parts don’t make a lot of noise when you adjust them.
  4. The packaging includes a warning card stating that these are not IP water resistant and should not be worn in the rain or during sweaty exercise. This is similar to previous models, but Sony wants people to be more aware of it.
  5. Connectivity – NFC is no longer a pairing option, and the USB-C port can only be used for charging, not as a wired output.
  6. The case is larger (for reasons explained below), and it no longer comes with an airline adaptor, but it does come with a short headphone and USB-C cable. On the plus side, the XM5 retains a headphone jack, allowing you to connect to a wired device and eliminate the need for a battery.

Some buyers will be concerned with the price. The XM5 is currently available for pre-order for $548, which is $100 less than the retail price of $649.95.

The 1000XM4s are RRP $395, but you can sometimes find them for a little less, such as on Amazon for $364.50 right now.
