Target is closing stores in Australia, and the dates have been announced.

Target has announced the dates on which some stores will close as part of a nationwide reorganisation scheduled to begin this year.

According to The Courier Mail, parent company Wesfarmers has announced that three stores in Queensland will close in the coming days.

Longreach in Queensland would close first, on 10 April, followed by Cairns’ Clifton Beach on 17 April, and Kippa-Ring in north Brisbane on 24 April.

A store in Cairns will close on May 1st, and a store in Townsville will close on June 5th.

Several other Target locations will be transformed to Kmart locations.

The news follows the retailer’s announcement in May of last year that it will close or turn stores into Kmarts due to “major structural change and disruption” in the retail sector.

10 to 25 ‘big format’ Target stores, as well as 50 Target Country stores, will be closed, with 10 to 40 large format Target stores and 52 Target Country stores being converted to Kmart stores.

The following is a complete list of Target locations that will close or be converted in 2021.

According to the Courier Mail, Kippa-Ring Shopping Centre manager Jennifer Spratling announced the retailer’s closure on April 24th, with the closure allowing for new retail opportunities.

“We’ve been working closely with Target for some time in preparation for this exit, which was announced in early 2020 and presented us with a valuable opportunity to unlock retail space and expand the Centre’s retail mix in line with our long-term masterplan,” Spratling said.

“At this time, we are working to finalise our plans for this room, so it is too early to share concrete information, but we hope to make some exciting announcements soon.”

Target thanked its employees, families, and customers for shopping with them over the years, according to a spokesperson.

“Our attention is on helping our team during this period as we look for appropriate redeployment opportunities within Wesfarmers as well as with other employers in town,” the spokesperson said.

“Our team’s well-being and fitness are our top priorities. All entitlements will be available to any permanent team members for whom we are unable to find appropriate redeployment.”
